| E-commerce is a booming market because it's fast, easy, and convenient. However, we must also recognize the dangers that are associated with it. One of the most prevalent forms of e-commerce fraud is spoof e-mails. This tutorial will take you through the basics of spoof e-mails, and offer you advice on how to avoid being deceived by them. |

What Are Spoof E-mails? |
Spoof e-mails are e-mails that seem to be from established businesses. They will ask you to give out your personal information, such as your password, address, credit card number, or social security number. This practice is known as"phishing". The "From:" field may seem to indicate PhiMart origins, but the sender's e-mail address may be forged. They often cite some type of system error, and may ask you to verify your account. PhiMart will never ask you for your personal information through e-mail. These e-mails may also include a link to a legitimate looking page. Such links may be forged as well. Once you've logged in from the spoof page, your user ID and password will have been compromised. Never download a file attachment through these e-mails. They may be harmful viruses, Trojans, or key-loggers, all of which will compromise your security.

How Can I Tell If It's A Spoof E-mail? |
If the e-mail asks you for personal information through a direct e-mail response, it's most likely a spoof. PhiMart will never ask for your personal information this way.
The e-mail may include a link, but links may be forged too. The safest option is to open your web browser, manually enter http://www.phimart.com into the address bar, and sign in from there. If you think that the e-mail may be a spoof, do not click on the link. It may download Trojans, viruses, or other harmful software onto your computer.
You may also check e-mail address in the "From:" field, but remember that e-mail addresses may be forged. However, if the e-mail address does not end with "@phimart.com", it is certainly a spoof. |
